Quilted Trash bag Lamp

By Minjeong Kim

introduction

I have always dreamt of making delicate items with cheap materials that usually don't get a second glance. By weaving thin wire through a white plastic trash bag, I made a lamp shade that emanates superb soft light. The shade will hold its shape too.

The plastic trash bag takes on a fabric-like form. 28-gauge steel wires from the hardware store are stitches in and out of the surface of the bag.

When the wires are stitched in a crossing direction, the bag gets more structural support as well as more wrinkles of texture. The center circle was sautered to act a fixture for the light bulb.

But that didn't quite work, so I cut out circular plates of mesh, drilled out a circle at the center, and put the lamp wire through. Two mesh plates sandwich the bag, and screw together.

The lamp shade looks like a pillow case or cloud in daylight.

Lit, it glows.

The quilting gives an interesting wrinkly texture.
